Teachers offering free tuition

As thousands of Greek households struggle to make ends meet, a number of teachers at private tuition colleges — or ?frontistiria,? which offer supplementary education from elementary school upward — are offering their services for free this school year at a network of classes set up with nongovernmental organizations.

The Tutors? Association began three years ago with just a handful of classes and is aiming to expand this year to cover more parts of the country, after overcoming the initial bureaucratic obstacles.

Similar initiatives are also being organized by the Archdiocese of Athens, which uses the municipal library in downtown Monatiraki to teach a total of around 100 students. ?We have over 40 educators,? Sevastianos Andreadis, who runs the program, told Kathimerini. ?We have had an abundance of volunteers come forward and we have a lot of teachers on standby who are willing to take on children with learning disabilities.?
