Surgeon suspended following baby death

A surgeon who carried out a routine operation on an 11-month baby at Iraklio University Hospital last week has been suspended pending an internal investigation after the child died from complications. The child underwent three operations in three days.

Hospital director Nikos Kokkinis said the surgeon who carried out the first operation has been suspended.

Coroner Manolis Michalodimitrakis said the boy?s stitches were not applied correctly, leading to his intestine being ?strangled.?
