Metro, ISAP and tram to run over weekend

The Athens metro, the electric railway (ISAP) and the tram will be running over the weekend but services may be interrupted next week.

This week, transport workers on the above modes were on strike every weekday, only calling off their action on Wednesday afternoon. Their unions are demanding that employees? salaries not be included in the unified pay structure for the civil service and that the government drop plans to raise fares by 25 percent.

Unions representing workers on the metro, ISAP and tram are due to meet by Monday to decide whether to extend their action. Bus and trolley bus employees will also meet next week to decide if they should stage further strikes.

STASY, the company that manages fixed-track forms of public transport, yesterday announced a 1,327 percent increase in its operational budget surplus, although this was partly on the back of increased state funding.
