US Embassy warns visitors of racist attack risk

The US Embassy on Friday updated its advice for visitors to Greece to include the risk of attacks against those “perceived to be foreign migrants” following a rise in racist assaults.

The embassy warned of “a rise in unprovoked harassment and violent attacks against persons who, because of their complexion, are perceived to be foreign migrants.”

It said people of African, Asian, Hispanic or Middle Eastern descent were most at risk.

There have been no reports of recent attacks on US citizens but the State Department’s travel section referred to “confirmed reports of US African-American citizens detained by police conducting sweeps for illegal immigrants in Athens.”
