Police link Kozani heists to domestic terror group

At least one of four suspects detained in connection with a lucrative double heist on two banks near Kozani, northern Greece, on Friday is believed to be a member of the urban guerrilla group Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, police sources said Friday.

The four men, aged between 18 and 25, were arrested following two almost simultaneous holdups on branches of ATEbank and Hellenic Postbank in the small town of Velvento, near Kozani, on Friday morning. Between eight and 10 people were involved in the two robberies, according to witnesses who said they saw masked assailants using sledgehammers to smash through the facades of the banks before threatening staff using heavy weapons, believed to be Kalashnikov assault rifles. The perpetrators netted more than 200,000 euros in the raids. Of the four detained suspects, two are believed to be students at Kozani’s technical college and the other two Athens residents.
