Decision on Marfin suspect pending

A council of judges was expected to decide on Friday night whether a suspect charged in connection with a fatal arson attack on a bank during a protest rally in 2010 in Athens will be required to remain in custody following a disagreement between the investigative judge and the prosecutor.

The judge said that there is not enough evidence to keep the 30-year-old in custody.

In his testimony, the defendant said he was present at the rally, but denied any connection to the attack, which killed three bank employees, claiming he arrived at the scene when the Marfin Egnatia branch was already in flames. “Shocked, I stood there for a while thinking if there was anything I could do to help,” he said.
