Knives, clubs, cellphones seized from Korydallos

A search of the cells in Attica’s high-security Korydallos Prison on Friday turned up dozens of forbidden items including homemade knives and clubs as well as cellphones.

The surprise search was carried out on the orders of prison managers in the wake of a series of prison escapes and attempted breakouts from both Korydallos and other institutions across the country in recent months.

On Wednesday, in the wake of 11 prisoners escaping from Trikala jail in central Greece last week, Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis announced a raft of measures aimed at boosting security in prisons. These include the recruitment of more prison guards and the installation of bulletproof windows at guard posts.
