Detainee who escaped from Thessaloniki hospital rearrested

Police in the early hours of Tuesday managed to track down a 32-year-old man who escaped from police custody while undergoing a medical check-up at Thessaloniki’s Ippocrateio Hospital.

The man, who is Greek of Georgian decent, was being held at a police station in Evsomos while awaiting transfer to prison for an eight-year stretch on theft charges.

He managed to elude the two police officers who were guarding him as he underwent regular medical checks, apparently catching a taxi in front of the hospital.

He was arrested at 2.50 a.m. at a bar in the suburb of Ambelokipi.
