Transparency watchdog asks financial prosecutors to investigate public sector dealings with offshore firms

The general secretary for transparency and human rights, Giorgos Sourlas, asked financial prosecutors Tuesday to investigate the public sector’s dealings with offshore companies after a probe by the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) found that some were scamming the state to gain subsidies.

Sourlas said SDOE found that in one case, a company claiming subsidies produced an invoice for machinery that was 2,000 percent above its actual value.

He said that authorities should aim to recover any money gained from false claims for funding.
