Greece likely to hold local elections with European Parliament vote next year

Greece is likely to hold local elections with the European Parliament elections due next May, Kathimerini understands.

The issue has been discussed by the three coalition parties and there has been a decision to hold the two ballots at the same time.

Sources said that New Democracy, PASOK and Democratic Left are concerned about a voter backlash in the European Parliament elections, as well as an expression of euroskepticism.

They believe, however, that they will perform more convincingly in local elections and that holding the two ballots together will help counter the effect of a negative result in the European Parliament vote.
