Police bust active robbery ring in northern Greece

A burglary ring believed to be behind at least 18 breakins in northern Greece has been smashed, according to police in Thessaloniki who on Friday announced the arrest of eight suspected ring members, all Georgian nationals.

The ring specialized in breaking reinforced security doors, according to police, who said the robbers had netted an unspecified amount of cash as well as household appliances, jewelry and other valuables.

The intruders targeted apartments in Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Giannitsa and Katerini, according to police who said they were seeking another four suspected accomplices.

A search on the homes of the arrested suspects turned up some of the stolen valuables as well as a range of tools believed to have been used to break security doors. One suspect, aged 39, was also found to have ancient artifacts in his home.

The eight Georgians faced a prosecutor on robbery charges and were to be brought before an investigating magistrate later in the day.
