Venizelos heckled by municipal workers in Irakleio

Socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos was heckled by an angry crowd during a visit to the village of Arkalohori, in the Cretan prefecture of Irakleio, on Thursday night, when protesters took issue with him for approving a streamlining of the civil service.

Protesters, chiefly municipal employees who face induction into a mobility scheme that will see their wages reduced and their possible transfer to other posts or dimissal, had gathered outside the Community Pharmacy at the village that Venizelos was visiting.

The protesters chanted anti-government slogans and some threw plastic bottles of water at Venizelos who was unharmed.

One demonstrator was briefly detained by police.
