Ten percent of municipal police to remain in local gov’t network, says minister

Ten percent of municipal police officers will remain in the municipal network with mayors determining which positions they will fill, said Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis on Wednesday.

Speaking on Mega channel, Michelakis said that 90 percent of police officers would be transferred to the Greek Police department, primarily to reinforce street patrols and increase staff at local prisons. The are rougly 3,500 municipal police officers across the country.

Municipal police transfers are part of a series of reforms sought by the government, which include 25,000 civil servants to be placed in a job transfer scheme by the end of the year.
