Two more cases of West Nile virus reported

Two people, an elderly man in Thessaloniki and a young woman in eastern Attica, have been infected with West Nile virus over the past few days, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO).

No more details were made immediately available.

Last Tuesday, authorities reported the first case this year, a 78-year-old resident of Spata, eastern Attica.

The West Nile virus is carried by birds and spread to humans by mosquitoes. KEELPNO has been running a public awareness campaign to encourage better prevention against mosquitoes, which arrived earlier and in greater numbers this year following an unusually hot spring.
