Malia stabbing suspect caught; police recover knife

Police have recovered the knife used to fatally stab a 19-year-old Briton at the Cretan resort of Malia early Tuesday and are holding the suspected murderer and another 20 British tourists thought to have been involved in a fight outside a local nightclub.

Officers identified the victim as Matthew Barton and said that he was stabbed during a fight involving as many as 30 people at around 3 a.m. It is not clear what caused the clash between two groups of young men.

A 19-year-old British man, who was not named, was arrested in connection to the stabbing. Police said they found the knife used in the attack, as well as bloody clothes and shoes, in the teenager’s room.
