Father, daughter arrested over claiming dead grandmother’s pension

A 19-year-old girl and her 51-year-old father have been arrested after a wary postal worker called the police when the girl asked to change the address at which her grandmother received her pension.

Police responding to the call from the post office in the Athenian suburb of Aghios Dimitrios, found that the young woman had been sent on the errand by her 51-year-old father, who was known to have been illegally claiming his mother’s pension since her death in the summer of 2007, cashing in more than 28,000 euros.

Authorities had been unable to find the man because he had moved since they became aware of the fraud. He had sent his daughter to the post office so that he could keep claiming the pension at his new address.
