Trees on new train route up for sale

The company that undertakes infrastructure projects for the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) has been give the unusual task of trying to sell 17,500 olive trees.

Ergose revealed it is to launch a tender for trees located on fields that have been appropriated as part of a scheme to build a new train line between Athens and Patra.

“The price of these types of olive trees at nurseries is between 400 and 1,500 euros each,” said Ergose CEO Constantinos Spiliopoulos. “We’ll start with a price of 10 euros per tree and hope there will be enough competition to push the price up.”

The trees can be bought to be planted elsewhere or chopped down for firewood. Spiliopoulos said it was the first time Ergose was trying to sell trees.
