Road deaths decline in June by 8.3 percent

There were 8.3 percent fewer people killed in traffic accidents on the streets of Greece in June this year compared to last, according to provisional data released on Friday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), which said that road deaths dropped to 77 in the month compared to 84 last June.

The number of people that sustained serious injuries also dropped this June to 132 compared to 151 last year, while those who were slightly injured stands at 1,211 this June compared to 1,319 last year.

The biggest number of accidents occurred in Attica with 541 incidents, accounting for 21 deaths, ELSTAT said.

Traffic accidents are a leading cause of death in Greece, claiming an average of over 1,000 lives per year.
