Mayor injured as Amyntaio residents protest army barracks relocation

Protests on Wednesday by residents of Amyntaio, near the northern city of Florina, against government plans to relocate the local army barracks elsewhere resulted in the injury of Amyntaio Mayor Makis Iosifidis, who was transferred to the hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

The clashes between residents and police officers broke out in the early afternoon after police cordoned off the barracks in preparation for the removal of vehicles and equipment from the site.

Residents object to the relocation of the barracks due to the anticipated repercussions on the local economy.
