Ithaca mayor removed from post over debts to the state

The mayor of the Ionian island of Ithaca has been removed from his post after running up personal debts to the state.

Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis ordered that Yiannis Kassianos stop acting as the island’s mayor after a disciplinary committee investigated his case.

Kassianos is also accused of falsifying his tax statement.
