Son of Cypriot ex-minister to be extradited to Greece for trial

A top Cyprus court on Tuesday upheld a judicial order for the extradition to Greece of the son of former Cypriot Interior Minister Dinos Michailides (photo) for trial in connection with a money-laundering racket centered around former Greek Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos.

Michalis Michailides is to be sent to Greece within 10 days, court sources said.

His father is today to defend himself before a Athens prosecutor on charges of helping to launder money from kickbacks that Tsochatzopoulos is alleged to have pocketed from the purchase of Russian missile systems.

Both father and son have been linked to an offshore firm named Beeston, one of several allegedly used by Tsochatzopoulos to cover the trail of kickbacks from defense deals.
