Thessaloniki mayor promises traffic restrictions
Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris on Thursday promised to introduce a system of traffic restrictions similar to the one used in central Athens to ease congestion and pollution levels if he is re-elected in municipal elections next May.
Speaking ahead of World Car-Free Day on Sunday, Boutaris said that the northern port cannot “fit” all the cars currently circulating and pledged to impose a system similar to the one used in the capital – where cars with license plates ending in an odd number can enter the city center on odd-numbered days of the month and cars with plates ending in an even number can enter on even ones – if he is re-elected.
