Jail sentences handed down to convict, guard over drugs

A court in Lamia on Thursday sentenced an inmate and a prison guard found guilty of trying to smuggle heroin into Malandrino Prison.

Alket Rizai, an Albanian national serving time for murder, had nine years added to his current sentence, while prison guard Yiannis Margonis was ordered to serve five years and six months.

Margonis was caught carrying 213 grams of heroin into Malandrino Prison in his car, with taped telephone conversations revealing that the drugs were destined for the convict.

There was a strong police presence at the court on Thursday as Rizai has escaped twice from the capital’s Korydallos Prison, in 2006 and 2009, and made violent attempts to break out of other facilities where he has been held since.
