Golden Dawn No. 2 faces magistrate; one more arrest made
Golden Dawn MP Christos Pappas, said to be the second-in-command in the ultranationalist party under leader Nikos Michaloliakos, faced a magistrate and was also due to appear before a prosecutor investigating corruption charges on Sunday at Athens’s main court complex on Evelpidon Street.
Pappas is the sixth Golden Dawn MP to face a magistrate following the arrest on Saturday of Michaloliakos and another four deputies who are all facing charges of belonging to a criminal organization.
Pappas turned himself in to authorities on Sunday after a warrant for his arrest had been issued the previous day.
Shorty before entering the court on Sunday evening he shouted into the cameras of television crews reporting on his transfer “Don’t believe them, they are liars. This is an occupation government. Long live nationalism!”
The 51-year-old Golden Dawn MP earlier on Sunday arrived at police headquarters in Athens in a taxi, where he turned himself in to authorities.
Police also reported on Sunday that they arrested a suspect in Salamina, a small island off the coast of Piraeus, in connection with the ongoing investigation into Golden Dawn’s activities, which has also led to the arrest of another 13 party officials linked, among others, to the murder earlier this month of hip-hop artist Pavlos Fyssas by a self-proclaimed member of the party.
