Justice minister denies resignation claims after Golden Dawn MPs’ release

Brussels – Greek Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou denied on Wednesday that he was considering resigning over the conditional release from custody of three Golden Dawn MPs.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with European Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding in Brussels, Athanasiou described as «absurdities» rumors that he would step aside.

“I do not know if there is any intent behind these rumors but there is no such issue,» he said. «Whey would I or [Public Order Minister Nikos] Dendias resign?

“The fact that Golden Dawn MPs have been released does not mean they are no longer suspects or that there are not indications they are guilty. Pre-trial detention involves a number of criteria such as if the suspect’s address is known, if it is likely they will commit more crimes and so on. The investigation continues.”
