Rainy weather to continue, especially in Attica, Thessaloniki, Ionian
The stormy weather that reached Greece on Monday is set to continue Tuesday, the National Hellenic Meteorological Service said, adding that Attica, Thessaloniki and the Ionian islands are expected to bear the brunt of the wet front.
Monday’s downpours caused several problems in the Greek capital, with the fire department receiving over 250 calls to pump water out of flooded buildings, and traffic backing up for several kilometers at a number of major thoroughfares, including Pireos, Petrou Ralli, Poseidonos, Syngrou and Kifissou.
In Kamatero, northwest of the capital, a section of Fylis Avenue collapsed, prompting authorities to close off the road.
Southern Greece also experienced quite a bit of flooding on Monday, with local media saying that three cars were swept up by torrential rain on the outskirts of Kalamata.
In the mountainous part of Arcadia, lightning struck the provincial road between Chrysovitsi and Stemnitsa, opening a one-meter fissure in the asphalt.
No injuries were reported.
The stormy weather is forecast to continue through Thursday. Rain and thunderstorms will ease off on Friday and Saturday, though they are expected to return from Sunday and Monday.
