Elderly blind woman claims abuse at hands of avaricious relatives

An 80-year-old blind woman alleged to have been detained against her will and tortured by her nephew and sister in the former’s apartment in Thessaloniki was transferred to the hospital on Wednesday and her relatives detained for questioning, police said.

Officers launched an investigation after receiving a query from the Thessaloniki School for the Blind, where the 80-year-old had been a resident before disappearing earlier this year.

The elderly woman was eventually found in her sister’s apartment and reportedly bore signs of undernourishment and beatings.

Her sister and nephew are believed to have had their eye on the 80-year-old’s assets, according to police.
