Life sentence for Kavala man who murdered, burnt body of female victim

A court in Kavala, eastern Macedonia, sentenced on Monday a 27-year-old man to life in prison for murdering 33-year-old Zoi Dalaklidou in the northeastern city last December and then burning her body.

The suspect, who owned a butcher’s shop close to the apartment block where his victim’s body was found, pleaded guilty to murdering and sexually assaulting Dalaklidou. He received a 25-year-sentence on top of his life term for the assault and other crimes he was found to have committed.

Dalaklidou, who worked in Thessaloniki, had returned to Kavala to stay with her parents over Christmas and was attacked as she was about to enter their apartment block following a night out on December 28.

The attacker, identified only as Ch. P., attempted to rape his victim before killing her. He then took a jerry can of petrol from a motorcycle parked outside the apartment block, poured it onto his victim and set fire to her to cover his tracks.

The trial took place amid tight security, with the assailant wearing a bullet proof vest.
