Euro leftists pick Tsipras as Commission president candidate
SYRIZA is just “a step away from power,” Alexis Tsipras told an audience of European leftists in Madrid on Saturday.
“The time of the left has come. This is our time to change Europe, and we will do it,” the leader of Greece’s main opposition SYRIZA party said during his speech at the 4th European Left Congress.
During the meeting, Tsipras was confirmed as the European Left’s candidate for European Commission president.
The leftists want the Commission president to be elected by European voters rather than nominated by the European Council and then approved by the European Parliament.
