City of Athens determined to keep capital graffiti-free
The City of Athens will continue efforts to keep the Greek capital free of unsightly graffiti and so-called “tagging” signatures, the deputy mayor for sanitation, Andreas Varelas, said on Thursday, warning taggers not to “bother writing on the walls we have already cleaned.”
Varelas said that all walls cleaned since the start of City Hall’s campaign in the summer have been painted over with a special emulsion that is easier to clean of spray paint and markers. He also said that the campaign, which the municipality runs with the help of citizens’ groups and professionals in the buildings affected, will continue this year.
Cleanup crews will start the year focusing on the marred walls of historical buildings on Stadiou Street near Omonia Square.
