Greece should help Bulgaria in its resource management
Do you think it possible that Greece and Bulgaria would ever go to war over water? Both countries have common water supplies. Because of climatic change, the rainfall in Bulgaria has dramatically decreased, which could potentially lead to tension, but I don’t think it will happen. Much can be done in the sector of governance to avoid problems. In Bulgaria, a lot of water is wasted. As much as 50-60 percent is leaked, compared to the European average of just six percent. And the irrigation system is also inefficient. I hope that Greece will see that it is in its best interest to help Bulgaria develop in these sectors. The World Bank is funding a program in Costa Rica that forces those who exploit water – bottlers, the tourism industry and so on – to make payments for forest management.
