Crime rates show promising decline in 2011-2013 period

Crime rates dropped to the lowest level in three years in 2013, a report published by Greek Police Headquarters showed on Friday, attributing the decline to a stronger focus on crime prevention among law enforcement authorities.

According to the data, 141 homicides were recorded in Greece in 2013, 24 less than 2012 (14.5 percent) and 43 less than the year before that (23.3 percent).

Robberies posted a similar decline, dropping to 4,919 in 2013 from 5,900 in 2012 and 6,600 in 2011. Burglaries and home break-ins came down by an average of 19.2 percent over the three-year period, the report said, reaching 74,538 in 2013 from 87,912 in 2012 and 96,925 in 2011.
