Greek bill paves way for development on forestland

A new forestry bill that allows more scope for construction in forested areas was unveiled on Thursday by Alternate Environment Minister Nikos Tagaras.

The new legislation allows the building of housing developments, monasteries and motocross circuits, among other things.

According to the would-be law, up to 10 percent of an area of forestland stretching to more than 50 hectares could be used for building holiday homes.

The bill is due to be tabled in Parliament soon.
