Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday, laying a wreath on the grave of his predecessor, Archbishop Makarios, at the Kykkos monastery in Cyprus. Makarios was the first president of Cyprus who governed the island from 1960 to his death in 1977, having been briefly deposed during the 1974 coup that provoked Turkey’s invasion of the island.
