Minister announces new island airport, upgrades

Greece’s Infrastructure Ministry has announced the construction of one new island airport and the expansion of an existing one in order to meet international standards and ensure compliance with modern safety regulations.

During an inspection last week on the Cycladic island of Paros, a magnet for Greek as well as foreign tourists, Michalis Chrysochoidis said the new 1,400-meter runway airport, which began in 2012 at the island’s Maggano area, will open its gates in April 2015. The aim, Chrysochoidis said, was for the new facility to be ready in time for next year’s tourism season.

Meanwhile, Chrysochoidis announced, works are under way to increase the runway length at Syros airport. During a visit to the site, he said the government will soon put to tender a 5-million-euro project to upgrade the runway, making it suitable for all types of aircraft as well as charter flights.
