Two killed, one seriously injured in road accident

Two people died and another one was seriously injured when a driver lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road in central Athens.

The accident occurred on Petrou Ralli Street shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Witnesses said the driver had accelerated his car, a grey Smart, in order to beat the red light when the fatal accident occurred.

The vehicle veered off the road, hitting two women standing near a bus stop. One of the two women was killed on the spot while the one standing next to her was seriously injured and is hospitalized at Pireaus’s Tzaneio at critical condition.

The vehicle also hit and fatally injured a police officer walking outside the Aliens Bureau on Rallis Street before smashing into a row of parked cars. Unconfirmed reports said two more people suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Smart car and his passenger both escaped unharmed.
