Former sport center chief accused of embezzling 800,000 euros in one month

A former president of the National Youth Center of Aghios Cosmas, in southern Athens, is accused of embezzling at least 800,000 euros from the organization’s coffers while a probe continues to ascertain whether the official may have stolen more during his tenure from August 2013 to August this year.

The charges were brought by a prosecutor after an investigation into claims by workers at the sports center that they had not been paid for several months during the tenure of the former president.

The deputy sport minister who received the complaint, Yiannis Andrianos, referred the case to the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE), which discovered the shortfall.
