Ex-mayor connected to another 1.1 mln euro hole in city’s coffers

Former mayor of Thessaloniki Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, who is serving a 12-year prison sentence for the embezzlement of nearly 18 million euros in municipal funding, is to face new charges over another 1.1-million-euro hole in the city’s coffers.

A prosecutor on Tuesday asked for new charges to be brought against the ex-mayor, as well as his former deputy and another five municipal officials, after state inspectors investigated a series of unexplained payments that were made by the municipality between 1998 and 2004.
