Drug arrests at island dance festival top 130

A police raid yesterday on the site of a dance music festival on the northern Aegean island of Samothrace resulted in 37 drugs-related arrests, bringing to 130 the total number of festival-goers caught for such offenses over the past week. Two of the Greek and foreign nationals arrested yesterday during a large-scale operation in which sniffer dogs were used will be charged with trafficking. One of the two was caught with 600 pills of the drug ectasy. Another four people – including a border police guard – were arrested on Saturday at the port of Alexandroupolis, one of the two main departure points by ferry for the island. Four more arrests were made late on at the other main departure point, the harbor of Lavrion in southeastern Attica. The weeklong festival, an annual event first held in 2001, started on Wednesday. Last year, police arrested 55 festival-goers for drugs offenses.
