New president to be sworn in on Friday

Prokopis Pavlopoulos is due to be sworn in as Greece’s seventh president at 6 p.m. on Friday during a ceremony in Parliament.

After taking up his post, the former interior minister will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and then go to the Presidential Mansion for the official handover from outgoing Karolos Papoulias.

As is customary, Pavlopoulos will receive congratulations from political, religious and military leaders on Saturday.

Pavlopoulos received the backing of 233 of 300 MPs in Parliament when the vote took place on February 18.
