Greece’s neighborhood police to start patrols

The Citizens’ Protection Ministry said on Thursday that “neighborhood policemen” would be on the beat in Athens and Thessaloniki from Monday.

The officers will start patrolling in the Athens suburbs of Halandri and Kallithea, as well as the Thessaloniki areas of Triandria and Evosmos.

The policemen will patrol the same streets every day and will be in direct contact with locals in a bid to build a relationship between the community and the police.

Authorities aim to expand the pilot scheme to 22 areas in the country’s two biggest cities.
