Highway toll charges suspended over weekend for referendum

All highway toll charges will be suspended over the weekend to ease they journeys of voters wanting to participate in Sunday’s referendum, Alternate Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis said on Thursday.

Spirtzis said the concession had been agreed following talks with highway contractors.

It was also confirmed on Thursday that Hellenic National Railway (OSE) tickets will be subject to a 50 percent discount until July 6, the day after the referendum, while a 25 percent discount will apply for KTEL intercity bus services.

The decision came a few days after the government decided to offer free access to public transport for the entire week to lighten the burden on citizens following the imposition of capital controls on banks.

The free travel on public transport applies to the Athens metro, buses, trolley buses and the ISAP electric railway but not for the Proastiakos suburban railway.
