Two of the suspects fled the island in a sea taxi early on Sunday after the killing, giving the driver 500 euros to take them to Varkiza where, they claimed, their child had been taken ill.

The five suspects being held sought to escape in a similar way but were stopped by police. It is thought that the couple that escaped by sea taxi have with them the jewels and cash the perpetrators took from the home of Manolis Economou.
