Meter rigger caught red-handed in Athens

A 43-year-old electrician has been arrested on charges of allegedly tampering with Public Power Corporation meters in order for them not to record power consumption in exchange for cash, Greek police announced on Saturday.

The suspect was detained in Athens while allegedly adjusting a PPC meter at the home of a 36-year-old man who was also arrested.

The 43-year-old allegedly charged 50 euros for home meters and 100 euros for shop meters.

Police said the department has verified 18 cases of home meter tampering and six instances of tampering with the devices at stores.

Authorities believe the suspect’s list of “clients” included over 100 households and 50 stores, and are expected to determine PPC’s incurred losses.
