Three to stand trial over 27-kilogram cocaine haul

A 38-year-old former baseball player and model allegedly confessed Tuesday to helping a gang smuggle 27 kilos of cocaine from Latin America into Greece with the intention of selling it on to other markets in Europe.

The Greek athlete, who also admitted to being a drug addict, was among three suspects arrested at a warehouse in Aspropyrgos, south of Athens, last week and remanded in pretrial custody by a prosecutor Thursday.

The other two suspects are a 48-year-old man from Guyana and 38-year-old Guyana-born Dutchman who is considered to be the mastermind of the operation.

Sources told Kathimerini Thursday that the arrests were made as part of an operation between the Greek Police and the US Drug Enforcement Agency on the basis of information acquired by an undercover officer who infiltrated the gang.
