Municipal councilor arrested over animal cruelty
A 68-year-old councilor in the municipality of Paggaio in Kavala, northern Greece, was arrested Tuesday following the publication of a video showing him beating his dog.
The video, which was shot by a neighbor, shows the 68-year-old standing over the chained dog in the garden of his home and hitting the animal repeatedly with a stick or cane and shouting. The abuse appears to stop when three women arrive at the scene.
According to a veterinary who examined the dog, it suffered deep gashes to its head and bleeding in one of its eyes, and was clearly in a state of shock. The 68-year-old was to face a local prosecutor later in the day on charges of animal abuse.
