Alternate Minister for Citizens’ Protection Nikos Toskas on Friday met with the leadership of the Greek Police to discuss security measures for the November 17 anniversary of the 1973 student uprising against the dictatorship, an occasion often marked by violence.

Authorities are concerned that anarchist elements in Athens may be planning extensive action, following a call to arms.

A declaration posted online on November 11, allegedly written by convicts Nikos Romanos and Panayiotis Argyrou, called for a “month of coordinated actions” with vandalism against shops, university occupations and attacks with “incendiary devices on fascists and bosses.”

The text has also raised concern among authorities at the city center’s universities, which are regularly used either as strongholds by anarchists or are subject to attacks.
