Retail workers protest another Sunday opening

The union representing retail store employees has called a 24-hour strike for Sunday to protest the fact that shops are opening to mark the start of the winter sales period.

The Federation of Private Sector Employees (OIYE) said that shop staff had to work on three consecutive Sundays over the Christmas and New Year’s period and should not be asked to go to work again this Sunday.

OIYE claimed that many staff do not receive extra pay or days off for working Sundays.

The winter sales began on Monday and are due to run until January 29.
