Ministry tells private schools to pay teachers overtime

The Education Ministry has issued instructions to all private schools in Greece to pay teachers overtime if they exceed their normal schedule, which is 30 hours of teaching a week for those who are in full employment.

“Private school teachers, often under the indirect or direct threat of losing their jobs, are dragged to schools on afternoons, evenings, weekends and public holidays for all types of events (parent-teacher meetings, bazaars, opening days, cultural and sporting activities and extracurricular activities) without being paid,” said the Federation of Private School Teachers in Greece (OIELE), which supported the ministry’s decision.
