Tax collectors continue protests with strike on Friday

Tax collectors continue their action against the formation of an independent public revenue authority with a 24-hour strike on Friday and will rally outside the Finance Ministry in central Athens.

The new revenue authority, which will replace the existing state-controlled general secretariat, is included in the government’s multi-bill which it plans to pass in Parliament on Sunday. But tax inspectors oppose the measure, claiming they are being “treated like the guinea pigs of extreme neoliberal policies” and that they are bearing the brunt of popular discontent.

“The ever increasing popular dismay with the barbarous taxation policy coupled with the inability of citizens to cope with their tax obligations, have transformed our services into a focal point of social tension, conflict, attacks etc,” the union of tax inspectors said in a statement.
